THE NEED FOR GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING IN SCHOOL AND COLLEGE
It is well known to us that the society where we live is rapidly changing from an organized traditional society to a complex technological developing one .
This Change is also noticeable in our developing ones. It is also obvious in our educational, social, economic and vocational system. According to Okobia and Okorodu (2014), there is increasing educational opportunities for almost everybody.
In our school and college today crimes, violence, mass failure, truancy, stealing, cultism and examination malpractice are on the increase making it difficult for the classroom teacher to carry out his teaching job and mitigation of all these undesirable antisocial behaviours.
In Nigeria society, many parents are ignorant of their children’s upbringing. They do not care about the behavior of the children, Rather they relinquish their responsibilities to the school teachers and care giver’s.
Parents are busy pursuing material wealth, forgetting that good children are the the greatest assets of parents. The information technology has made it possible for foreign behavior to be transferred to our society and consequently desecrating our traditional norms and value like respect for elder, being one’s brother’s keeper etc, have all gone with the wind.
As a result of these, traditional methods of problem solving have become inadequate.
These conditions demand that considerable attention to be givento each individual in fostering.
Paper growth and development in terms of social/personal adjustment, vocational choices and broader educational opportunities. This can only be realized through meaningful programme of guidance and challenges of the parents century which lies before the parents, schools, teachers, school children and youths make it imperative for the establishment of counseling service in schools
