Pep Guardiola: Old Trafford Is Not Scary for City

Published

on

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has claimed that Old Trafford no longer carries the fear factor that it once did.

City visit Manchester United on Wednesday in a massive derby for both sides.

Man Utd have been a dominant force in the Premier League over the years but their city rivals are beginning to turn the tables, having won the league twice since United’s last title in 2012-13.

Old Trafford was a house of horrors for City in the past, with the team failing to win there between 1974 and 2008.

But City have now won five of their last seven visits to Old Trafford in the Premier League, and Guardiola confessed that his team no longer view the stadium the way they once did.

When quizzed on City’s strong recent form at Old Trafford, Guardiola said: “I don’t make theories about what happened in past for what is going to happen in the future. Every game is completely different.

“The reason why is the fact this club in the last decade grew a lot and it’s not scary to go there.

“Before it was maybe more difficult. But the players Manchester City have had in the last decade have made this game a little bit more equal.”

Bayern Munich have been crowned Bundesliga champions for the seventh Consective time after beating Eintracht Frankfurt in the last game of the season.

Niko Kovac’s team held a two-point lead at the top of the German top flight heading into matchday 34 and a superior goal difference to Borussia Dortmund, meaning a draw would have been enough to seal the crown even if their nearest challengers won at Borussia Monchengladbach.

But there was very little doubt Allianz Arena, as the reigning champions wasted little time in getting their advantage with Kingsley Coman scoring just four minutes into the contest.

There was a momentary worry as late in the first half a Serge Gnabry goal was ruled out after VAR review, while Frankfurt found an equaliser early in the second half through Sebastien Haller.

With Dortmund leading through Jadon Sancho, another Frankfurt goal without Bayern reply would have put the champions under threat.

But just three minutes after Haller’s equaliser, David Alaba found the back of the net to restore the advantage and Bayern never looked back

Liverpool missed out on a first Premier League title despite beating Wolves 2-0 at Anfield on Sunday on the final day of the season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side moved onto 97 points from 38 games thanks to Sadio Mane’s double, but Manchester City’s 4-1 win at Brighton and Hove Albion means the Reds’ 29-year wait for the top-flight crown goes on.

Hope was kindled among the home fans when news of City going behind arrived shortly after Mane turned home, but once Pep Guardiola’s side moved ahead before half-time, Liverpool appeared resigned to their disappointment.

Senegal star Mane got his 22nd of a superb league campaign with nine minutes to go, but celebrations were largely muted in the Merseyside sunshine.
